Shakespeare and Company is an English-language bookshop in the heart of Paris, on the banks of the Seine, opposite Notre-Dame. Since opening in 1951, it’s been a meeting place for anglophone writers and readers, becoming a Left Bank literary institution.
Our bookshop is visited by readers from around the world and we aim to give them a pleasant experience of the book world. Being enthusiastic about sharing your favourite books is a must, and enjoying encountering lots of new people - often dealing with crowds - with a calm and friendly manner is also critical. Spoken French and English is essential, as is previous bookselling experience, punctuality, good detail orientation, and the ability to work in a team and under pressure.
Mission :
In collaboration with the shopfloor manager and working within the shopfloor management team, your responsibilities will be as follows:
1. Team Management:
In collaboration with the Shopfloor Manager, management of our team of booksellers (around 20 people): daily communication and monitoring, preparation of rotation schedules
Maintain a safe and pleasant working atmosphere that supports the wellbeing of the team
Assist with integration and training of new booksellers and interns
Adapt workload and tasks according to daily priorities and busyness of the shop
Delegate and involve all team members in the smooth running of the store
Liaise with the HR Manager for everything related to Human Resources (scheduling, weekly meetings, vacations, illness, delays, accidents, etc.)
2. Shopfloor Management:
Setting up, organizing, storing books
Greeting and helping customers, providing recommendations, and demonstrating exemplary customer service
Familiarity with stock management and POS systems, as well as Google Workspace tools
Coordination with other teams as needed (stock, reception, book buying, events)
Cash management
Communication with security guards when needed
Handling large groups of people / visitors
Support in organising events in the bookstore
Checking stocks regularly (books and other key items)

Profil recherché :
You have a broad general knowledge and a keen interest in books, particularly in English literature. While you may have previous experience in a bookshop, you definitely have experience working in a fast-paced, customer-facing environment.
You have excellent interpersonal skills and you enjoy working in a team.
You know how to motivate your team and maintain a positive and dynamic atmosphere.
You are able to deal with difficult and unforeseen situations (customer discomfort, fire alarms, accidents, lost items etc.) calmly, and you know how to take suitable action.
You are comfortable dealing with large numbers of people and able to stay calm, friendly and polite under pressure.
You are fluent in English and French and know how to adapt your communication to best communicate with a range of people.
